Australia PR — IELTS requirements by English level
For skills-tested visas (Subclass 189, 190 and 491), your IELTS scores contribute PR points based on which English level you achieve. All four skills must individually meet the threshold — one low skill disqualifies that level even if your average is higher.

How to improve your IELTS band score
Each band point increase requires targeted practice in specific task types, not general English study. Here is where most students gain marks fastest.
Listening — follow the recording, not the paper
Most marks are lost by candidates who re-read the question after missing an answer. Train yourself to move forward — marks for the next question are more valuable than stalling on one you missed.
Reading — skim-first, then scan
Never read the passage in full before looking at the questions. Skim for structure (paragraph topics) in 90 seconds, then scan for specific answers. Band 7+ readers spend most of their time on the questions, not the text.
Writing — Task 2 is worth twice as much
Task 2 (essay) is worth 2× the marks of Task 1. Spend 40 minutes on Task 2 and only 20 on Task 1. Use cohesive devices (However, Furthermore, In contrast) — examiners award Coherence and Cohesion as a standalone criterion.
Speaking — fluency beats vocabulary
Examiners award Fluency & Coherence as the first criterion. A naturally flowing answer at Band 6 vocabulary will outscore a hesitant answer with Band 8 vocabulary. Practise speaking continuously for 2 minutes without stopping.

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated? +
The IELTS overall band is the average of your four skill scores (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example, scores of 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, 6.5 average to 6.5 overall (26 ÷ 4 = 6.5). This calculator uses that exact formula.
What IELTS score do I need for Australia PR? +
For skilled migration visas (189, 190, 491), you need every skill to individually meet the threshold. Band 6.0 in each skill = Competent English (6 PR points). Band 7.0 in each = Proficient English (10 points). Band 8.0 in each = Superior English (20 points). The overall band average does not determine your PR English level.
Does the IELTS overall band determine my Australia PR points? +
No — your minimum individual skill score determines your PR English level, not the overall band. If you score 7.5, 7.5, 7.5, 6.5, your overall is 7.5 (Proficient) but your English level is assessed at Competent (6 points) because Speaking fell below 7.0. The lowest skill determines the level.
Is IELTS Academic or General Training better for Australia PR? +
Both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training are accepted for Australia skilled migration. General Training is typically considered slightly easier to score in Writing and Reading. If you also need IELTS for university admission or professional registration, Academic may be required — check your specific occupation and institution requirements.
