About the test

What is the Michigan Test of English?

The Michigan Test of English (MET) is an English proficiency test accepted by universities across Australia, the UK, USA and Canada, with scores reported on the CEFR scale from A2 to C2. The shorter MTELP version tests Grammar, Listening and Reading in 90 minutes and is scored as a percentage out of 100.

The Michigan Test of English — also known as the MET (Michigan English Test) or MTELP (Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency) — is an internationally recognised English proficiency assessment developed by CAMLA (Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments), formerly the University of Michigan’s English Language Institute.

The test is accepted by hundreds of universities, colleges and institutions across Australia, the UK, USA, Canada and beyond as proof of English proficiency for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Australian students: The Michigan Test is accepted at many Australian universities for direct entry and conditional offers. It is also used by some registered migration agents as supplementary evidence of English ability.

FAQ

Michigan Test questions answered

Everything you need to know before sitting the MET / MTELP.

📞 Need help choosing?
Unsure if the Michigan Test is right for you, or what score you need? Our advisors can tell you in 15 minutes.
What is the difference between MET and MTELP? +
The MTELP (Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency) is the 3-skill version: Grammar, Listening and Reading only — 90 questions, 90 minutes, scored as a percentage. The full MET (Michigan English Test) adds Writing (30 min) and Speaking (15 min) and provides a CEFR level per skill. For most Australian university admissions, the MTELP is sufficient.
Is the Michigan Test accepted in Australia? +
Yes. Many Australian universities accept the Michigan Test for both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. Common minimum scores are 75%+ (B2) for UG and 80%+ (C1) for PG. Always confirm requirements directly with the admissions office of your target university, as policies differ.
How long does it take to get Michigan Test results? +
For CAMLA-administered test centres, official results are typically available within 3–8 business days. Some test centres offer expedited results. MockMaster mock test results are available instantly after you submit your test.
How many times can I take the Michigan Test? +
There is no official limit on how many times you can take the Michigan Test. You can retake as many times as needed. Most candidates allow at least 4–6 weeks between attempts to allow time for meaningful improvement. MockMaster’s unlimited mock tests let you practice as much as you need before your official test date.
What score do I need for a student visa? +
For Australian student visas, the Michigan Test is accepted as evidence of English proficiency in some cases — check with your migration agent. For UK Tier 4 student visas, you typically need at least B2 on the full MET. Always verify current DHA (Australia) and UKVI requirements with a registered migration agent.
How accurate is MockMaster’s AI scoring? +
Our AI is trained on thousands of real Michigan Test responses and delivers CEFR band predictions within ±0.5 of typical real test results. Grammar and Listening are objectively marked. Reading comprehension uses a combination of exact-match and semantic scoring. Writing and Speaking scoring (Pro plan) uses multi-dimensional rubrics modelled on official CAMLA marking criteria.
